About the artwork
This work focuses on the existence of man by means of the vulnerability brought into the image by the artist. Manders considers his entire artistic practice as a self-portrait: The Self-Portrait as a Building. Man is therefore conceived as a house within which, just as in life, a balance is sought.
About the artist
Manders strives for timelessness and universality by using archetypal forms and familiar-looking materials such as clay, steel and wood as part of his installations. As a sculptor, the artist sticks to the tradition of bronze, while his sculptures often seem more fragile than they actually are. It is often difficult to determine what material Manders' sculptures are made from, blurring the boundary between reality and illusion.
