About the artwork

This monumental work was inaugurated in 1922 and garnered great public interest. The bronze soldier statues were created by Guillaume Dumont. These four guard soldiers, looking out in all four directions, exude a sense of honour, while also serving as a funerary monument.

About the artist

In Paris, Stynen was captivated by the innovative ideas of Le Corbusier. He designed the Belgian Pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, the Casinos in Knokke, Ostend and Chaudfontaine, and the Uccle Cultural Centre. His masterpieces include the triangle of the BP building built on the old walls around Antwerp, the Esso Hotel, the Conservatory and the Singel.
