Using his inimitable technique, the worldrenowned German artist Stephan Balkenhol creates recognisable images of people and animals from tree trunks. What is truly amazing is that he manages to hew both the figures and their plinths from the same block of wood. He also leaves behind traces of his process of creation. The incisions of the chainsaw he uses to fashion the rough shape and indentations of the chisels applied to finish off the outer skin contribute to a sense of awe surrounding the detailed shapes he creates. He often finishes off his artwork with paint.

The exhibition is the first in Belgium to provide an overview of more than 30 years of artistic expression in wood. Most of the large and small sculptures, relief carvings and drawings originate from Belgian private collections and have never been displayed together before.
